Sublight Demo vs Early Access

What the free demo teaches — and what the $11.99 Early Access build unlocks.

Demo vs Early Access Comparison

Sublight still offers a free Steam demo (app 4468530) beside the paid Early Access game (app 3829310). That split confuses new captains: which build should you install tonight, and when is the $11.99 purchase worth it? This page compares demo versus Early Access without sales fluff, then points you to the right next wiki guide.

The mid-page overview video shows the warship bullet-heaven fantasy shared by both builds. Use it as tone, then read the tables below before spending money. For day-one checklists after you buy, open Getting Started. For a buy/skip framing, see the Early Access review.

Exact demo node counts change as Codebrew updates the free build. Treat the table as intent, then verify in-client after install.

What the demo is perfect for

Install the demo when you need answers to:

  • Do firing arcs and ship facing feel fun, or frustrating?
  • Does automatic turret fire plus salvage routing click for you?
  • Can your PC or Steam Deck handle swarm density? Cross-check system requirements.
  • Do you enjoy space bullet heaven pacing at all?

Play two or three short runs focused on arcs, not perfect RNG. If you hate facing management after an hour, you will not love Early Access either — buy something else. If you keep saying “one more node,” you are the target audience.

What Early Access adds that the demo cannot replace

Early Access is the product Codebrew is selling today:

  • Six finished levels with multiple bosses across rebel fleets and alien swarms.
  • Nine playable ships with alternative loadouts and integrated weapons/abilities.
  • Sixteen-plus weapon types (autocannons, railguns, chainguns, barrage, and more) plus deep passives.
  • Weekly modifiers that rewrite session plans — see Weekly Modifiers.
  • Meta progression via credits and challenges unlocking ships, weapons, and captains.
  • Long runs that can reach Hunter pressure — see Hunter Flagship.
  • A published roadmap through 2027 seasons on Roadmap.

Steam also states Early Access should last at least six months with regular updates, and that the price is not planned to rise at full release. Positive early review waves (~100% of the first small sample) reflect combat feel more than “content complete.”

Buy now vs wait

Buy Early Access now if you already like the demo’s arcs, you want hangar unlocks and weekly variety, and you accept balance patches mid-journey.

Stay on the demo if you only want a taste, your hardware is borderline, or you prefer waiting for a post-Q4 faction drop before spending.

Do not buy expecting a finished campaign threat map, mod support, or every roadmap ship today — those are future seasons.

Practical install path

  1. Install the demo and complete the tutorial.
  2. Confirm controls with How to Play.
  3. If hooked, buy Sublight Early Access and follow Getting Started.
  4. Skim this week’s modifier, then plan a build with the build planner.
  5. Bookmark patch notes so hotfixes (like 0.19.x unlock and price fixes) do not surprise you.

Shared systems across both builds

Whether demo or EA, durable skills stay the same: move with WASD or arrows, boost with Shift, respect firing arcs, commit to Ignite or Cold instead of random passives, and salvage without leaving your primary cone facing empty space. Those lessons transfer 1:1 — which is why the demo remains valuable even after you own EA.

Choose deliberately. Sublight’s demo is a honest try-before-you-buy tool; Early Access is the living warship sandbox the roadmap keeps expanding.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Sublight questions.

Is the Sublight demo still available after Early Access launch?

Yes. The free demo remains listed on Steam alongside the paid Early Access build so new captains can test the fantasy first.

What is the Early Access price?

Launch pricing is about $11.99 USD on Steam, with regional variants. The developer has stated no current plans to raise the price at full release.

Does the demo include weekly modifiers and all nine ships?

Expect a shorter content slice and reduced roster versus the full EA launch package. Install the demo to see the current free limits after updates.

Should I buy if I only liked the trailer?

Play the demo first. Trailers show fantasy; the demo reveals whether firing arcs and salvage routing feel good on your machine.

Where do I go after buying Early Access?

Follow Getting Started, skim Weekly Modifiers for the current rotation, then lock a build with Best Builds and the build planner.
