Sublight Captains
Meta unlocks that support a hull — they do not replace firing arcs or weapon identity.
Captains are part of Sublight’s between-run progression alongside ships and weapons. Credits and challenges expand your hangar; captains are one of the unlock tracks players notice early in demos and Early Access. This page explains how to think about captains without treating them as a substitute for learning arcs or committing to Ignite/Cold plans.
If you are brand new, finish Getting Started and unlock a second combat hull from the ship roster before collecting every captain portrait.
Where captains sit in the meta loop
Sublight is single-player. You do not draft a multiplayer party. A run still centers on one warship, its hardpoints, integrated weapons, abilities, and mid-run level-ups. Captains are meta-layer unlocks that can bias stats, starting options, or progression flavor depending on the current Early Access build.
Because solo Early Access iterates quickly, exact captain names and numeric bonuses can shift after hotfixes. Treat the rules below as durable priority logic:
- Combat toolkit first (hulls, weapon families, alt loadouts).
- Captains that reinforce a hull you already understand.
- Collection / cosmetic captain unlocks last.
Day-one captain mistakes
- Spending all early credits on captains while your second ship remains locked.
- Swapping captains every run instead of learning one hull’s arcs.
- Assuming a captain alone creates a “best build” without weapons or status identity.
- Ignoring weekly modifiers and blaming the captain for a hostile rotation.
How captains interact with ships
Read captains as multipliers on a platform, not as the platform. A missile frigate role (including developer-referenced Shortsword-style fantasies) still needs forward pressure and flank answers. A starter battleship still needs intentional turret cones. Captains cannot aim your stern guns for you.
When you unlock an alternate ship loadout, re-evaluate captains: the alt may want different sustain, mobility, or economy leanings. Use the Ships hub for hull differences and the ships tier list for role letters.
Progression checklist
- Clear a few learning runs on the starter hull.
- Unlock a second combat-capable ship or alt loadout.
- Unlock one weapon family you actually fire on purpose.
- Then unlock a captain that supports that pair.
- Skim patch notes after economy hotfixes so you do not overpay for outdated prices.
- Keep a credit buffer for Q4 2026 ship waves on the roadmap.
Captains and build identity
Before a push run, write one sentence: ship + weapon family + Ignite or Cold (see Ignite and Cold). If the captain does not help that sentence, leave it for later. The build planner exists to catch this kind of soft mistake before undocking.
Challenges, credits, and feedback
Meta unlocks flow through in-game challenges and credits. When a ship appears available but will not unlock, update past known 0.19.0-class hotfixes first. Carry balance feelings to Steam Discussions or official channels listed on Links — captains and ships both move with community feedback during Early Access.

Captains are seasoning. Learn the warship first.
Example hangar week
A healthy Early Access week might look like this:
- Monday — two short learning runs on the starter battleship; spend nothing.
- Tuesday — unlock a frigate or alt loadout after a clean clear; ignore captain shop.
- Wednesday — read the weekly modifier, pick Ignite or Cold, and attempt one push run.
- Thursday — if the push ship feels right, unlock one captain that supports that pair.
- Friday — challenge farm on the comfortable hull; bank credits for roadmap ship waves.
That rhythm keeps captains in their lane: supporting a practiced warship instead of starring in a collection checklist.
When captain text conflicts with patch notes
Early Access hotfixes can retune prices, free weapon tiers, and unlock flags. If a captain tooltip promises an economy lean that no longer matches the armoury, trust the live client and the latest patch notes. Wiki pages explain priorities; Steam builds define numbers.
If a captain unlock appears stuck, verify game files, update past 0.19.x-class fixes, and confirm the challenge actually completed. Then ask on Steam Discussions with your version string — see Official Links.
Closing reminder
Sublight rewards captains who treat the hull as a turret platform. Meta portraits are optional spice on top of arcs, salvage discipline, and status identity. Expand the hangar with intention, and let captains follow the ships that already win your runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Sublight questions.
Should I unlock captains before a second ship?
Usually no. Expand combat hulls and weapon families first, then pick captains that reinforce a platform you already understand.
Do captains replace builds in Sublight?
No. Builds still depend on firing arcs, weapon families, and Ignite or Cold identity. Captains support that plan.
Why did a captain or ship fail to unlock?
Update the game — Early Access 0.19.0 fixed some ships that looked available but were not unlockable. Then recheck challenges and credits.
How do weekly modifiers affect captain choice?
Pick the hull and status identity for the week first, then a captain that supports that pair. Do not force last week’s captain into a hostile rotation.
Where are captains listed in the wiki nav?
Under the Ships (players) category beside the ship roster. Use both pages when planning hangar spends.
